On paper sounds like it will be a lot of fun even if it may also be quite derivative. We have bits of Predator in there, bits of Alien, bits of the crossover movies between the two but you also have no technology and a Viking-era setting. Sadly though the film never lives up to its potential to be a fun "Friday night with a few beers" type film. Instead it sets out its stall to be, well, not serious but certainly not a lot of fun either. It invests itself with a rather heavy tone that the material cannot live up to and it has the effect of being slightly dulling in terms of the appeal. On top of this the action is not quite as exciting as it should be. OK we get things jumping but nothing really has a sense of tension or fear to it. I put this down to the way it is shot because, although the effects are mostly OK, the film doesn't make good use of the darkness and the fear of the unknown – suffice to say, this is not Alien.
The film certainly is derivative and you should already know that it will be before watching it. This in itself is not a problem because lots of films will remind you of other films – what you don't want though is your film to constantly remind the viewer of other, better films. This is what happens here – you can't watch it without thinking about what you've seen that did what you just saw better than Outlander just did it and how you'd rather be watching that than this. The cast have some good names in there but nobody really lifts it. Caviezel plays it too dull and is part of it being overly serious within itself. Myles has a bit more spunk to her and is a model of what the film should have been, but mostly she is alone. Huston I liked but Hurt just seemed to be in it for the money and nothing else – again playing it too straight.
Outlander sounds like fun – it never sounds like it will be brilliant cinema and I never expected it to be. However it delivers the ideas with a serious air that kills the sense of fun that it should have had while also failing to deliver much in the way of genuine thrills or tension. It is not as bad as I have made it sound but it is just yet another derivative monster movie that seems happy ticking the basic boxes and leaving it at that – you, as I, have a right to expect better than that and it can be found it other, better films. In 709 DC, in the Iron Age, a spacecraft crashes in Norway in the Viking kingdom of Herot, and the pilot Kainan (James Caviezel) survives. He turns the beacon on; learns the language and culture of the planet using a machine; and finds that the predator called Moorwen that he was transporting had escaped. While chasing the alien monster, he finds a village completely destroyed and he is arrested by the warrior Wulfric (Jack Huston) that believed he killed the locals and is brought to Herot as prisoner. But sooner he proves his innocence and courage to King Rothgar (John Hurt) and his daughter Freya (Sophia Myles) falls in love for him. Kainan and Wulfric become friends and together they chase the Moorwen.
"Outlander" is a wonderful adventure and a great surprise for me indeed. The cast is excellent, leaded by James Caviezel; the lovely Sophia Myles, from "Tristan + Isolde" and "Hallam Foe"; the veteran John Hurt; the always efficient Ron Perlman; and the unknown nephew of Anjelica Huston Jack Huston. The engaging story has elements of "Starman", "Beowulf" and "Predator", and is developed in a perfect pace. The special effects are decent and this movie is a great entertainment. My vote is eight.

When McCain later joined with Hollywood screenwriter Dirk Blackman to produce the screenplay, Blackman added science fiction elements to the story by changing the main characters into aliens. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, principal actor Jim Caviezel described Outlander as "kind of like Braveheart (1995) (1995) and Highlander (1986) (1986) combined." The movie states that the story takes place in 709 A.D. Norway, although it actually was shot around Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Laborador in Canada. The language he speaks at the start is Old Norse, the precurser from which modern Scandinavian languages such as Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish originated. The actors were coached in Old Norse/Icelandic by an Icelandic professor. Yes. The Department of English at McMaster University, (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) has placed the text to Beowulf online here. The choice of reading it in old English or translated into modern English is facilitated.
